Training technicians in the UK

Education within the UK has undergone major changes in the last few years as employers expect a much higher level of skill and knowledge from their employees. Indeed the technicians themselves have more expectations from their jobs, seeking to furthertheir careers through further education. Higher technology is required with the rapid changing of the Industry. Technicians are no longer required to only clean and feed the animals but are expected and expect to become more involved in techniques suchas genetic manipulation and embryo transfers which require a higher level of skill and understanding than was previously expected from them. The need for Animal Technicians to undertake formal training as well as practical experience is considered important. Animal Technologists need to possess skills relating to the care and welfare of animals, animal production methods, and to be able to conduct scientific procedures. Generic skills such as information technology, management of staff and resources, budgeting and financial control are also required. Some of the more routine scientific procedures previously undertaken by researchers are beginning to be undertaken by experienced Animal Technicians who have gained a Home Office license under the ASPA after attending a relevant course to enable them to do so. Indeed the Animal Technician is often the most appropriate person to carry out some of these procedures, having had the most experience in the techniques involved. The introduction of NVQs, and BScin Animal Technology will widen the field of learning and open up more opportunities for Animal Technicians in the UK whilst at the same time provide them with the necessary skills they require to care for the health and welfare of the animals used for scientific purposes within their establishment. The IAT will continue to provide levels of qualification for those wishing to gain professional qualifications through the Institute for the foreseeable future.
