Fastener training and education has always been a very important part of my fastener career, even before I started to work in the family fastener distributorship, Capitol Sales, in the mid-1950s. My dad used to say I knew the "threads per inches" tables before I knew my multiplication tables in the fourth grade. As I have always said, I went to the "College of Hard Knocks" to learn about fasteners and fastening applications; there were no fastener training materials other than manufacturers' catalogs or brochures and just good old "on-the-job" experience. I still learn something new every day about fasteners! When I returned from Vietnam in 1968, I had purchased a new Minolta 35mm camera, like most sailors, and had learned how to shoot all types of pictures. Upon my return back to work at Capitol Sales, I started to photograph all types of fasteners with micro, macro and zoom lenses and developed a 160-slide fastener training program. We introduced every new employee to our slide training program, and it increased their productivity sooner than the previously used on-the-job training method. The program was so successful that a few years later, the NFDA used it as a guide to develop a similar one for their members. The fastener slide training program was the leading training method for several years. In 1977, I wrote the Industrial Fastener Study Guide to provide a sound conceptual basis for studying industrial fasteners. The Guide would introduce the novice to the wide range of industrial fasteners and be a review for the more experienced fastener specialist. Students would use the Study Guide to form a good foundation to further their knowledge in the ever-changing and dynamic fastener industry. The Study Guide has 500 true/false and fill-in-the-blank questions; thread terminology and technology charts, graphs of head styles, point styles and types of drives, and a handy fastener glossary.
