Survey of automotive engine oils in Japan: the effects of diesel engine oils

Recently, the performance requirements of automotive engine oil include a long drain interval and fuel economy. This paper shows the results of analyses for a total of 71 samples of diesel engine oil purchased in the retail market in Japan from1994 to 1997. In order to evaluate oil quality, the analyses performed on each sample were put under the two general headings of Viscosity and Additives. Analyses of samples showed that 1.1% of the samples were questionably labeled for viscosity. Someoils had questionable additive content.
