The effects of diquat and ethylene on the content of lipids, fatty acids, malonedialdehyde, and hydroperoxides within the winter rye seedlings and apple tissues were studied. It is found that under influence of diquat and ethylene the contents of phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylinositol and unsaturated fatty acids were decreased, whereas the content of saturated fatty acids was increased. Lipid peroxidation as monitored by malonedialdehyde and the level of hydroperoxides was increased by diquat and ethylene treatment. The free radical mechanism of ethylene action is proposed and schematically described.
