Serraca punctinalis (Lepidoptera, Geometridae) is a mass phytophagous insect in western Siberia and the northern Caucasus

Specific features of the biology in Serraca punctinalis [Hypomecis punctinalis] inhabiting birch forests of western Siberia, Russia, were studied in 1970-95. The role of H. punctinalis in the species composition of the autumn-summer group was analysed, and the number of larval instars was determined. The role of parasitic insects and diseases in the dynamics of their numbers was also studied. It is concluded that in western Siberian regions, a specific geographic form of this species occurs which differs from the populations inhabiting other parts of the wide range of H. punctinalis.
