The female reproductive organs (ovary, Mehlis' gland, uterus wall, vagina wall) and associated ducts of the proteocephalidean cestode Gangesia parasiluri were studied by transmission electron microscopy. The complicated winding duct for fertilization between ovary and ootype is described. The formation of egg capsules in this duct during embryogenesis in G. parasiluri was observed. The capsule is the first embryonic envelope that encloses the maturing oocyte with vitelline cells. The vitelline globules disappear in the fertilizing duct and simultaneously a labyrinth-like reservoir membrane arises on the surface of eggs and within the duct. The vitelline follicles contain cells at various developmental stages; vitellocytes and follicles are enclosed with cytoplasmic syncytium. without nucleus. The ovary contains germ and trophic cells, and the latter disappear as a result of autophagy. The epithelium of the oviduct has apical folds with numerous microtubules. Microtrichial polymorphism was not found in the lining of vagina, but the apical part of microtrichia in the proximal vagina region was longer as compared to that in the other microtrichia in the distal. region. The epithelium of the uterus wall contains cisternae of Golgi complex and secretes microgranules into the uterine lumen. The data obtained are compared with literary ones on other cestode species.
