New research shows that most ridges and lakeshores don't slow migrating songbirds. I'm not sure where the myth was born, but it is certainly pervasive. I've heard it repeated by well-respected biologists and birders, but when I ask where they read about it, no one can give me a satisfactory answer, I asked one wildlife agency biologist where she learned that night-migrating songbirds followed ridges, and she said that's the way it worked at Hawk Mountain, the Pennsylvania hawkwatching mecca.
