Roger Tory Peterson's fifth edition arrives with a little held from friends. The cardboard pouch mantled the day's mail. I didn't need to see the Houghton-Mifflin label to know that it contained an advance copy of Roger Tory Peterson's fifth editionof Birds of Eastern and Central North America. This moment had been anticipated with measures of clarion and despair for years, ever since I signed on as one of three advisors who would see Roger's guide to completion. Why clarion? Because the book is the functional link between the man whose name is synonymous with the century that spawned birding and those birders who will come to this avocation in the century ahead.
