I was beginning to get worried. Jamie and I had been filming otters on the River Torridge since October and had got less than five minutes of footage. We had assured the BBC that we could make a film about otters in England during daylight, and it seemed a foolish promise to make. Otters are difficult to film at the best of times - they are shy, clever and scarce. And five months into production we had only managed to film a few minutes of activity, which was some of the worst footage Jamie and I hadever shot. In 1927, Henry Williamson wrote perhaps the most famous of all animal stories -Tarka the Otter. The book follows the life of a young male born below the old Canal Bridge on a beautiful stretch of the River Torridge between Bideford and GreatTorrington in north Devon. Here, Williamson's exhaustive observations of wild otters fishing, mating and escaping the hunt enabled him to construct the hard, tragic life of Tarka in a manner both epic and believable. So it was here we decided to locate our film.
