When the Mexican government granted 48,000 acres of land to Johann Augustus Sutler in 1839, they literally gave away a goldmine. Gold was discovered in 1848 just 30 miles east of Sacramento, an event that led to the largest peacetime migration in U.S. history as thousands of prospectors swarmed on the area to stake their claims and their hopes in them thar hills.
