Industry Meeting Demands for More Effective Vaccines

Over the past two years, researchers have steadily piled up a small mountain of data that reaches a common conclusion: seasonal flu shots for older Americans often miss their mark. When Wilbur H. Chen, MD, and a group of colleagues at the Center for Vaccine Development at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore recently ran a study among the post-65 population, they concluded that a senior would have to be injected with four times the level of antigens contained in a standard trivalent vaccine dose to get the same immune response seen in a healthy person under the age of 40.
