Prevalence of Fusarium and Curvularia Species in Mold Affected Grains of Sorghum Genotypes

Grain mold of sorghum has been reported to cause losses to the tune of 100 per cent in highly susceptible cultivars (Williams and Rao 1981). Discoloration of the grain and softening of the seed make the moldy grains unsuitable for market. Besides, such grains contain mycotoxins poisonous for both human and cattle's. However, depending on infection of mold on grains their suitability for raising a general crop or seed production can be decided. Similarly, different sorghum genotypes react differentlyto infecting molds (Umak 1985; Garud 1992). Earlier study (Deshpande 1991; Garud 1992; Sawant 2000; Shinde 2003; Magar 2003) carried out at Parbhani clearly indicated that Fusarium and Curvularia species are the major fungi associated with grain mold problem in Marathwada region of Maharashtra State. Taking into consideration all these aspects, a study was made to find prevalence of these two fungi in 38 sorghum genotypes.
