Nigeria's latest marginal fields round appears to have been taken over by politics with the awards no longer open to public bidding and instead being handed out as patronage gifts. The round was finally launched late in 2013 after years of delays but then immediately went very quiet over the Christmas period. It included 31 fields with 2.8 Bn bbl of reserves in total and was originally delayed because of concerns over the safety of pipelines that ran though some of the acreage offered.
