Population dynamics and infestation pattern of Leucinodes orbonalis Geunee in wet season brinjal with respect to different ecological parameters

The study on the population dynamics and infestation pattern of brinjal shoot and fruit borer, Leucinodesorbonalis Guene was carried out during 2009 and 2010. The adult moth first appeared in the pheromone trap during 24 thstandard meteorological week (SMW) in both the years and thereafter the pest attained its first peak during 31 st and 32 nd SMWand second peak during 37 th and 39 th SMW in 2009 and 2010, respectively. However, the highest larval population was observedone week after the maximum adult activity in each case. The pest infestation on shoots commenced from 26 th SMW in both theyears of study with maximum infestation on 32 nd and 33 rd SMW in 2009 and 2010, respectively. However, the peak fruitinfestationoccurred during 38 th and 40 th SMW during 2009 and 2010, respectively. Among the ecological parameters only temperatureexerted a positive influence on the population build up and infestation of the pest and had maximum contribution towards theseasonal fluctuation. This study could be helpful not only in forecasting the outbreak of L. orbonalisbut also in initiating timelypest management decisions based on information on the seasonal activity of the pest.
