GROWING UP IN SOUTH AFRICA, I had a naturally outdoorsy lifestyle. I took for granted my connection with nature, enhanced, no doubt, by holiday visits to my grandparents' home nestled within a great forest. That was a longtime ago. I've lived in the UK fori4years and, as my childhood memories grow ever-distant, my focus has shifted to creating experiences my children will cherish. I had been aware of the need to give them opportunities to connect with the great outdoors for a while when, in October 2009,1 spotted a four-acre patch for sale in Dorset. I'd never considered owning my own stretch of woodland, but went to view it after work one Friday afternoon. Arriving in darkness and finding no dry place to pitch my tent, I spent a restless night on the forest floor.
