Dr. Low Dog: Maintaining good bone health is a lifelong process. First, it is important to note that the intrauterine environment has an immediate and important effect on fetal bone, and there is a growing body of data that suggests that this effect persists into childhood and possibly into adulthood. It is imperative that pregnant women have a healthy diet with adequate calcium and vitamin D, the latter of which is vitally important for the growth and maintenance of the skeleton. Vitamin D deficiency is unfortunately quite common in individuals, particularly those who are dark skinned and living in countries at higher latitudes.
