There are more and more unusual Australasian plants that push the hardiness boundaries in the UK but add great interest to borders. Leptospermum, also known as the New Zealand tea tree, or manuka, is one of them. Its pretty single pink or crimson flowers that appear over a long period are a useful boost of colour in spring and summer. It can be used as a border specimen or informal hedging.Growers in the South West find Leptospermum reasonably hardy. They grow well in mild coastal regions. In cooler inland gardens, they need the shelterofa south- or south west-facing wall. Butin areas that experience prolonged winter frosts, they will need to be grown in a cold glasshouse or conservatory.
