World markets for textile machinery: part 1—yarn manufacture

2017 was a positive year for the international textile yarn machinery market. There were increases in shipments of short staple spindles, long staple spindles, open-end rotors and double heater false-twist draw texturing spindles. The only decline was in shipments of single heater false-twist draw texturing spindles but shipments of this type of machine were already minimal and accounted for a negligible share of the draw texturing machinery market as a whole.In spinning, shipments of short staple spindles increased by 21% in 2017 to their highest level in three years although they were below the levels seen during 2010-14. Furthermore, they were below their annual average over the ten years to 2017. Shipments of long staple spindles rose by 46% to their highest level since 2006 and were well above their annual average over the ten years to 2017, and shipments of open-end rotors rose by 24% to their highest level since 1988.In draw texturing, shipments of double heater false-twist spindles rose by 27% in 2017. However, the rise came afterfive consecutive years of double digit decline. As a result, shipments remained below the levels seen during 2010-14 and were below their annual average over the ten years to 2017. Shipments of single heater false-twist spindles, meanwhile, plunged by 88% to their lowest level since 2012 and their second lowest level on record.A geographical breakdown shows that the rises in global shipments of short staple spindles, long staple spindles, open-end rotors and double heater false-twist draw texturing spindles coincided with increases in shipments of these four types of machinery to the textile industry in China. There were also increases in shipments of these four types of machinery to the textile industry in Iran, and increases in shipments to the textile industry in India in the case of short staple spindles, long staple spindles, open-end rotors and single heater false-twist draw texturing spindles. Also, there were increases in shipments to the textile industry in Uzbekistan in the case of short staple spindles, open-end rotors and double heater false-twist draw texturing spindles. Elsewhere, however, the picture was fairly mixed.
