Survey of the European fabric fairs for spring/summer 2021

The atmosphere at the European fabric fairs for the spring/summer 2021 season was overshadowed by economic uncertainties affecting the whole of the textile and fashion industry.It was also overshadowed by the outbreak of COVID-19,which subsequently led to the cancellation of trade fairs and conferences worldwide.Adding to these troubles,the Italian fabric industry performed particularly poorly in 2019,having suffered a 4.7% fall in revenues to their lowest level in several years.Several mills are focusing on the use of environmentally sustainable materials and the use of environmentally sustainable processes in the manufacture of their fabrics,and this was reflected in the exhibits at Premiere Vision Fabrics.Also important are recyclability and biodegradability of fabrics,and this importance is influencing the types of fibres being used in fabrics for the season.Natural fibres are a prominent feature of fabrics for spring/summer 2021,and cotton,linen and hemp are especially important.Overall,fabrics for the season are light and airy,and transparency is key.Many fabrics have a fluid quality which is achieved through the use of man-made cellulosic fibres.Texture is important,and several fabrics feature wrinkling,fil coupe fringe effects,seersucker effects or wavy effects.Prints and jacquards are also important,and motifs are generally large or medium in terms of scale.Several motifs have an organic quality,and include painterly florals and hand drawn geometric designs.
