Proteomic study of antibiotic resistance in Escherichia coli strains

Escherichia coli infections are frequently a cause of gastrointestinal disease both in human and animals (Jenkins et al. 2008). These pathologies are classified as zoonosis (Aktan et al. 2007) and transfer to human hosts happens through the consumption of unpasteurized food, raw meat, or contaminated water. Despite the fact that the mechanism of pathogenesis is often well known, treatments for the Escherichia coli enteritis are often inefficient because of antibiotic resistance. The evaluation of protein profiles in response to various stress mechanisms, such as, sensitivity to antibiotics or modifications related to antibiotic resistance (Li et al. 2007 ), could be represent a valid and integrating approach for the development of new therapeutic strategies.
