The New Zealand Government made a decision last year that would see the Standards Council disestablished and a new standards body established within the government agency, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment. Legislation was necessary to allow this to happen and in July, the Standards and Accreditation Bill was introduced to Parliament. The Bill received its first reading in Parliament on 4 November and was referred to the Commerce select committee, which is now calling for public submissions.
