Much of the cost associated with metallic corrosion can be saved by improved education of practising engineers and technicians. Maintaining the continued transfer of knowledge and experience through industry support and nonprofit organisations, such as the Australasian Corrosion Association, therefore, is a valued goal. This article summarises a step-by-step exercise for students of applied science and engineering, the development work of which, was originally supported by DERA, the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency (UK). The teaching methodology using physical scale models (see Figure I) has been applied and validated through University of Portsmouth (UK) undergraduate research projects and practical experiments. Any experimental detail not listed here can be found in the full published version of the paper [1].
