This is an edited version of the lecture given by Professor Galvele on the occasion of the receipt of the UR Evans Award at Manchester in September 1999. It is his personal view on the development of theories of localised corrosion after 40 years work in the field. The main area covered is pitting corrosion although he also touches on stress corrosion cracking, pointing out that this is still some way from being fully understood.
