During my career at STRI I have shown numerous non-turfgrass professionals around our experiment grounds in Bingley. We usually get around ten minutes into the tour before the visitor says something along the lines of "I never knew there was so much to it, I thought it was just grass".As turfgrass professionals we all know that the truth of the matter is that there is an awful lot to it. Get any part wrong - construction, choice of grass seed, sowing, management - and the facility will not perform to its optimum potential. Having said this, how often do we as turfgrass professionals stop to think about grass in its wider context and why it is such a successful plant family?
