Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy for Liver Metastases

The treatment paradigm for metastatic disease to the liver has changed dramatically over the last decade. With the demonstration of long-term survival after surgical resection in patients with colorectal liver metastases,' the focus of therapy for patients with "oligometastatic disease" to the liver has shifted from primarily systemic therapy to the incorporation of more local and liver-directed therapies. This evolution in the therapeutic model for patients with liver metastases has led to the proliferation of clinical data on the use of focal radiation therapy options for liver metastases, in particular, the use of stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT). In this review, we summarize the relevant studies evaluating the use of SBRT for liver metastases as well as the clinical and technical considerations when treating liver metastases with SBRT.
