Development of a Wavelength Division Multiplexing Transmission System - by Masayuki Shigematsu, Keitarou Iwai, Koji Nakazato, Shigeru Inano, Akira Fukuda, Nobuko Numasaki, Yasunori Murakami, Tetsufumi Tsuzaki, Motoki Kakui, Toshiaki Okuno,Tatsuniko Shitomi, Ichiro Matsuura, Tetsuya Ito, Toru Funaguchi, Masahiko Kochi, Isao Mizutani, Nobuo Yoshie, Satoru Nakazawa, Yugo Kawamura, Yoshiyuki Nishizawa, Toshinori Wakami, Toshinobu Matsuo and Masayuki Nishimura Sumitomo Electric has developed anew wavelength division multiplexing transmission (WDM) system featuring a bit rate of 2.4 Gb/s for up to 32 multiplexed channels, resulting in a maximum transmission capacity of 80 Gb/s in the 1.55-μm wavelength band. This WDM system also uses 4-stage,5-span amplification to support a non-regenerated transmission distance of 400 km. To cater for transmission lines comprising dispersion shifted fiber (DSF) or a combination of SMF and DSF, we also developed a WDM transmission system in which thetransmission wavelength has been shifted to the long wavelength band of 1.58μm to prevent the four-wave mixing that can occur on DSF lines. Bit rates of 2.4 Gb/s (STM-16) and 622 Mb/s (STM-4) are supported for SDH, along with 445 Mb/s (F-400M) for PDH.The space-saving design allows the terminal network element to be installed in a single INS rack and the repeater site element in a single compact unit. The system possesses the same alarm-by-relay-contact features found in conventional line amplifiersystems and also provides enhanced monitoring and maintenance features when connected to a terminal or central management system.
