US hot-rolled coil prices continued to climb toward $600/st on Sept. 14 with US Steel solidifying new offers with a $60/st hike. The daily Platts TSI US HRC index rose by another $17.25 to $579.25/st and has surged $140 since hitting a four-year low in early August. USS announced a base price increase by a minimum of $60/st for all flat- rolled products. After some initial confusion about where the increase left new offers, multiple market sources confirmed the hike put new HRC prices at $600/st from the steelmaker. Mills have been “flooded” with inquires and have limited capacity for October and November amid outages, according to one Midwest service center source. The pickup in inquiries and lack of availability was leaving many buyers stranded and provided the mills solid footing to continue to raise prices.
