Acute primary splenic torsion in a French bulldogg

A seven-year-old, intact female French bulldog weighing 11 kg was referred to the small animal clinic in Korneuburg with suspicion of an acute abdomen. During the diagnostic workup, the presumptive diagnosis of a primary splenic torsion was made. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed splenomegaly, a heterogenic, hypoechoic splenic parenchyma with hyperechoic interposing adipose tissue and mesentery in the hilus area as well as an absence of the colour-flow Doppler signal of the splenic veins. The subsequent exploratory laparotomy confirmed the suspicion of acute splenic torsion. A splenectomy was performed and the patient recovered without any complications. To the author's knowledge, this case report is the first documentation of an acute splenic torsion in a French bulldog. Abdominal sonography is an accurate technique for the diagnosis of splenic torsion.
