The original Etrich Taube (Dove) flying machine was the brain child of one Igo Etrich, an Austria-Hungarian designer and dates back to the late 1890s. His first design flew in 1910 Later versions were produced by other manufacturers under a variety of names (including Rumpler) and it became the first mass produced military aircraft in Germany prior to World War 1. It was in fact a pre WW1 monoplane and enjoyed a degree of popularity prior to the war being operated by a number of air forces including Italy, Austria-Hungary and even the Royal Flying Corps operated at least one of the type back in 1912.
