Biologists attract those who are committed to science in general, but to life science in particular. Creative writers attract many, and reduce chaos. In between these two ilks, however, lie those committed to metrication where there is none. They are a remarkable breed of thinker. Because of this, I have always enjoyed the company of fellow metric system artisans. Although our communications are sometimes tested on the anvil of standards, they may also--and not often enough--be served up on white cloth restaurant tables or carried for hundreds of meters on backpacks up the sides of mountains. Measurement-standards students that we may be, we are not a glum lot.
