Conversion to the metric system by some former English colonies, including the US, has been particularly slow. One of these countries was Ceylon, renamed Sri Lanka in 1972, which had become part of the British Empire in 1815 and gained its independence from that Empire in 1948. As a former British Colony, Sri Lanka was wedded to the British Imperial System of measurement. It took a farsighted individual to convert the country to the metric system. That individual was Ron Wijewantha, who passed away in Woodland, California, on 14 September 2019, at the age of 94.
