Fungal nail disease affects 2-14% of Western adults and has been associated with pain, cellulitis, and social distress. The dermatophyte fungi Trichophyton rubrum and T. mentagrophytes are the most common pathogens causing onychomycosis; however, Candida species and saprophyte molds may also be associated with dystrophic nails.1 Despite use of the oral antifungal medications, terbinafine and itraconazole, only 25-50% of patients achieve a disease-free nail after one year.
