More than eight years since the birth of bitcoin, central banks around the world are increasingly recognising the potential strengths and flaws of digital currencies. Guardians of the global economy have to address two kinds of issue. First is what to do, if anything, about the emergence and growth of the private cryptocurrencies that are grabbing more attention — with bitcoin sitting above $ 16,000 and futures training this week heralding a new level of mainstream acceptance. The second question is whether official versions should be issued.
