Effective communication on ICU rounds: Can we master competency for this procedure?

Effective communication among ICU providers plays a critical role in avoiding preventable harm and improving patient outcomes. Despite progress within some aspects of critical care, many ICU patients continue to experience preventable harm (1, 2). Inadequate communication is a leading cause of sentinel events reported to The Joint Commission and worsens patient outcomes (2,3). Conversely, interventions that enhance provider communication improve patient outcomes and reduce healthcare costs (4-7).
