The discovery of the Athabasca Oil Sands was no remarkable feat. Anyone travelling the Athabasca River could see the dark oily earth on the banks cut out by the flowing water. It was the development of the expertise to extract value from that vast resource that represents the great achievement. The task took decades of tireless work puzzling over the challenge of separating the bitumen from its sandy source material.
