Editor,Shaken baby syndrome (SBS) results from the injuries inflicted when an adult vigorously shakes an infant, usually < 1 year old (Johnson et al. 1995). The damage is even more serious when the shaking ends with impact (shaken impact syndrome) (Duhaime et al. 1998). The battered baby may not exhibit any external signs of abuse, which often makes diagnosis difficult. This is especially likely if the method of child abuse has been shaking. The shaking induces a whiplash-type motion in which acceleration-deceleration forces can cause retinal and brain injury which are not apparent to the naked eye.
