Microbiological Safety Testing: A Key Consideration in Device Design

Early in your career, you were a glassware technician/media prep analyst. What was that job like, and how did it help kickstart the rest of your career? When your family starts a business, it's an all-hands-on-deck situation. I remember countless hours every week with my family at the business in the early days of the company. If it was what the business needed, we all dug in to help, whether that meant washing glassware, preparing media, folding linens, or even sweeping or painting the floors. This is true for not only me but also for many of our long-time, loyal employees with whom I still work every day. In many ways, I had a larger family than just my father, mother, and sister. I had this extended family of employees when I went to work. Washing laboratory glassware and preparing media is certainly not easy. It can be wet, sometimes-smelly, detail-oriented work, but it started my training process. It taught me the importance of following procedures and recipes and gave me exposure to our laboratory environment and scientists. This would eventually have a big influence on my education and career decisions. I'm grateful that these experiences also helped me develop a get-it-done work ethic that continues to serve me well today. I still make our glassware washing and media prep rooms a regular stop on my visits to our facilities. I like to let the teams know that they are on the path to the presidency (at least that's how I did it). Your parents started Nelson Laboratories in the mid-1980s. Can you give us a sense of how greatly microbiological safety testing of medical devices has evolved since those early days?
