Knowing the numbers

In my February column I talked about the continuous improvement or Kaizen approach adopted by the best performing printers. One of the other common features they all share is 'knowing their numbers'. By that I mean knowing exactly how efficient they are. This is not achieved by having a raft of figures that need hours of analysis, and not by the kidology we can all indulge in at times - by that I mean that if you have enough performance indicators in your armoury you will always be able to find one that looks good.
