The concept of using contact lenses to measure glucose in tears has made a big splash in the media but the technology seems to be lagging behind the claims. Google is one company to have announced a plan to make a smart contact lens glucose monitor. In 2014, it submitted a patent to the US Patent & Trademark Office for a lens made from two layers of material, with a pinhole to admit tear fluid for testing by sensors. It would use a wireless antenna, thinner than a hair, to transmit readings to a smart device.
