Central North Island highways remain closed today after hundreds of drivers wereforced to abandon their cars in heavy snow two nights ago. Many motorists spent afreezing night out in their snow-trapped cars on the Napier-Taupo Highway. Morethan 700 people were evacuated from State Highway 5 between Taupo and Napier,and the Desert Road, after they became stuck in metre-deep snow. Yesterday 56motorists from SH 1 were ferried back to their vehicles, but the road closed againshortly after following another big snow dump overnight. Weather permitting, CivilDefence hoped to return the remaining drivers to pick up their cars.
