A report from the International Cooperation on Cosmetics Regulation(ICCR)and an industry joint working group,released in 2018,made it clear what progress has been made,noting 3D models are”useful both for dermal research and for the safety assessment of cosmetics".Noting that these 3D systems are potentially more effective than established two-dimensional(2D)alternatives,”because normal tissue functioning is dependent on interactions between multiple cell types",the report noted how 3D co-cultures provide the opportunity to develop biomarkers useful in risk assessment.The science has advanced sufficiently to enable some 3D culture systems to be mentioned in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s(OECD)technical guidelines for industry,addressing skin corrosion,skin irritation and eye irritation.
