AM to restart blast furnace at Fos sur Mer while working on Ghent reline

London—ArcelorMittal will restart its No. 1 blast furnace at Fos-sur-Mer in France in mid-September, a company spokesman told S&P Global Platts on Sept. 2. The leading steelmaker decided to blow in the BF to rebalance its crude steel output after starting a reline of one of its two BFs in Ghent, Belgium. “That reline starts this week,” the spokesman told Platts. Ghent last year produced 5.5 million mt of crude steel. ArcelorMittal idled the No.1 BF at Fos-sur-Mer on March 23 due to the coronavirus outbreak, as reported by Platts. ArcelorMittal has two BFs at Fos-sur-Mer with a combined design capacity for 4 million mt a year of crude steel. ArcelorMittal intended to temporarily shut the No. 2 BF at Fos-sur-Mer due to a lack of orders last month, but then decided to keep it in operation.
