Impact of baseline prehypertension on cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality in the general population: A meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies

Prehypertension is highly prevalent in the general population, and it is estimated to be more than 30% among United States[l], Japan [2], and China [3]. Prehypertension is a predict for cardiovascular events, and all-cause mortality [6,10-12,18]. However, inconsistent results have been reported [5,6,10,11,13,19]. Furthermore, there was a lack of accurate information concerning the real risks of cardiovascular disease (CVD) events in the general population. A well-designed meta-analysis demonstrated that prehypertension was associated with increased risk for coronary heart disease (CHD), particularly high-range prehypertension [20]. However, the risk of CVD or cardiovascular mortality associated with prehypertension was not discussed. To determine whether prehypertension increase the risk of CVD, cardiovascular or all-cause mortality in the general population, we performed a meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies.
