Bangladesh’s Payra coal-fired unit starts up

The first 660MW unit at Bangladesh’s 1.2GW Payra imported coal-fired plant started feeding power to the grid in February. The unit generated 81.9GWh over 13 days last month with output being intermittent. This is equivalent to burning 26,000t of 5,700 kcal/kg coal last month, assuming a 48pc generating efficiency, Argus calculations show. But coal burn at the 660MW unit could rise above 150,000t/month if it runs at full capacity. The plant started feeding the grid on 8 February but halted on 18 February to restart testing generation on 27 February. It continues to be “on test”, according to data from Bangladesh’s system operator PGCB.
