Hepatitis C and Hepatocellular Carcinoma

The risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is greatly increased in patients with cirrhosis resulting from chronic hepatitis C infection. Diagnosis and treatment of HCC remain difficult and mortality is high. Surveillance of individuals who are at risk is recommended, and the risk of HCC can likely be reduced by treating the underlying hepatitis.
