ACCOMPLISH the goal: hypertension and beyond.

Introduction: Hypertension remains a leading contributor to the development of stroke, heart failure, myocardial infarction, and chronic renal insuffi ciency. Globally, about one billion individuals suffer from hypertension. In the United States, there are about 73 million hypertensive adults, and this problem costs about Dollars 66.7 billion annually [1]. Despite the advances in hypertension management, this disease continues to be associated with a high mortality rate. Previous trials of hypertension treatment have demonstrated variable degrees of success in reducing cardiovascular morbidity and mortality [2,3]. Most of these trials evaluated the effects of hypertension management with monotherapy or adding other drugs as needed. Few hypertension trials have compared combination therapy using two drugs [4]. Most of these trials have failed to show differences in outcome when blood pressure was reduced equally between groups.
