Using male sterile AB type I (male sterility is recessive) and II (male sterility is dominant) lines, male sterile lines, and diversified ecotypes of fertile lines, it was shown that male sterility is controlled by 3 multiple allele genes. Ms was dominant and controlled male sterility, ms was the allele of Ms that controlled male fertility, and Msf was a multiple allele of this pair of genes and was a restorer of Ms. Dominance was in the order Msf > Ms > ms. The genotype of male fertile lines in ABtype I was MsfMs and the genotype of its male sterile lines was MsMs. The genotype of male fertile plants in AB type II was msms and the genotype of its male sterile plants was Msms. A scheme is presented for breeding new male sterile lines using linesof AB types I and II.
