On Sept 24, 1988, the world awoke knowing the name of Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson, after his world record win in the 100 m final at the Seoul Olympics. 3 days later they also knew the name of stanozolol, the anabolic steroid shown to have fuelled that success. Some 2 years later after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the full extent of East Germany's state-sponsored doping programme was revealed. No one would look at an Olympic event in quite the same way ever again.
