Han Qide: a medical and political leader in China.

In the early 1960s, medicine was a natural choice for China's best and brightest. But just a few years later, as the Cultural Revolution engulfed the nation, it seemed a very bad choice indeed. For Han Qide, an undergraduate at the elite Shanghai First Medical College, graduation in 1968 failed to open the door to the sort of brilliant career his western counterparts were embarking on. The child of an economics lecturer who owned a small trading business, Han was sent to a remote and impoverished rural region in west China.
