Nonindustry-sponsored drug studies for the treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), and even more so with randomized controlled studies, are a rarity, and the authors are to be congratulated on embarking on such an endeavor. This study represents the first clinical study that specifically sets out to examine the effects of carvedilol on LUTS in men with mild essential hypertension. Carvedilol is a well-established drug for treating hypertension and cardiac failure and has known alpha- and beta-antagonist activity. It has essentially been "off the radar" as a drug for treating LUTS given that its primary indication has been for treating conditions outside the comfort zone for most urologists.
